Hi all,
Anyone get MiamiDx working with one of those free telephone services? A
friend of mine recommended Dialpad.com -- but I can't seem to make it work
with MiamiDx. They have recommendataions on their site for making it work
with a number of firewall/IP-NAT systems, but despite poking the right holes
in the firewall (and even disabling it completely) it doesn't seem to work.
Outgoing sound works fine -- I can call a number, and they can hear me --
but I can't hear them.
I didn't get very far with MiamiTCPDump either; packets sent look like this:
09:21:42.844222 Shelly.1202 > fa0.washdc3-egw14.bbnplanet.net.0: udp 32
but I don't see any packets returning. There are lots of lines that look
like:
09:21:53.067659 [|tcp] (DF)
-- but I'm not sure what those are -- they don't seem to have any source/dest
info -- so perhaps the remote server isn't even returning the packets to my
LAN at all??? Or is it just in some indecipherable format that MiamiTCPDump
doesn't understand? Since dialpad has instructions to make this work with a
number of systems (including Linux IP-NAT) I figure it should be possible to
route through MiamiDx.
Anyway, Dialpad seems quite reasonable -- they don't require too much
personal info -- primarily a name and e-mail address (and you can get a
...uh... "unique" address from yahoo or similar to help protect your
privacy.) They just display your typical banner adds in the dialing window.
Other than that, you can call from any Windows computer to any phone in the
US for free. (You can also call worldwide PC to PC for free.) The software
is a 170K Java program, which is currently Windows only, but they are working
on other versions. (Mac is next) I don't know how standardized sound card
access is under Java -- I assume that is why it isn't automatically
multi-platform.
