That makes sense, although if it's merely a relay it still wouldn't allow
you to do rDNS lookups on LAN IP addresses.  That would require that it
act as a real DNS server for those queries, and then relay others.

This still doesn't explain why the Amiga couldn't use the SyGate DNS IP.
It might be worth experimenting with MiamiDiG.
