second properly-addressed attempt.
(Oops, forgot to re-address it to the list the first time, sent it to the
ISP)
:)
Hi, I'm new to the list and thought I'd edit and resend my last help request
for my ISP to the list. Does anyone have any ideas I can pass on to my ISP
to make service smoother?
--------
Over the last year or more I've been noticing increasing difficulty in
maintaining a usable dialup connection with my ISP's servers for browsing
(and e-mail).
Most times I don't actually lose the dialup connection, but I do lose
browsing connection to the servers in the middle of file transfers, forcing
me to manually disconnect and redial in order to continue, sometimes
multiple times within 5 minutes. With e-mail this also forces me to wait
for the e-mail server to drop the previously started connection before
retrying the message downloads (getting duplicate mails up to the point
that the connection failed).
Before their switch from another ISP server to their own servers (and a
while after) I rarely had these problems (including the following).
Another minor one which doesn't prevent me from using these online services
is more of a nuisance (because I have to close an error message window).
When I dialup, I get the message:
"Your IP address could not be resolved, so Miami has to fall back to
your IP address as your host name. Either your Internet Service
Provider does not support reverse mapping of the SLIP/PPP ports,
Or there is a problem with the DNS servers."
I'm using Miami 3.2b, and the settings haven't changed (other than the DNS
numbers and our chosen dialup username when they changed over) since
starting internet
service with them.
