Netmasks only apply to interfaces that group IP addresses together
in a consecutive range, such as Ethernet. The netmask then defines
the extent of that range.

For point-to-point interfaces there is no such range, because both IP
addresses can be arbitrary, e.g. one address could be 10.0.0.1 and
the other one 192.168.0.1, so netmasks do not apply.

As for the problem: I don't see the IRC dialog you mention (may have been
cut off by the list server), but if it is related to Samba then your
interface configuration in Samba is probably wrong. The SMB protocol has
different basic configurations for Ethernet, point-to-point links and
combinations of the two. Samba experts may be able to give you more
information on this. In any case, this is not related to netmasks on
the point-to-point link.
