I would doubt it's timing.  If it were timing why would it all of a sudden
develop this problem.

Also I've never heard of the timing causing a hesitation and a miss.

The box itself could be a problem and you could check that by disconnecting
it and turning the timing down to about 5 BTDC to make the car safe to
drive.
I have had a J&S timing box go bad on me once,

Run some Redline SL1  through the fuel and see if cleaning the injectors
helps.

I agree that the unit you have sounds like a JR unit.
