I also have a friend, he's an ER doc in SE Ohio. He loves it when the police
bring in people they've arrested or accidentally beat up or whatever else goes
on is rural Ohio.
He runs every test and workup on them he can order. Not because they're needed,
and he freely admits that they're not, but because he makes money off of each
test. He makes more than my salary was for many years off that one. I imagine
the cost to the system is bearing the larger part of that.
The system is not working.

Yeah, my cardiologist is a Canadian. He's down here because he hated being
told to do 1/2 of what he wanted to do and not being able to run tests to
determine problems. He says the health care here is far superior to Canada.
In Canada there's zero talk of abandoning universal public coverage for basic
medical. We argue about how much more public money should be dumped into
health care, but nobody would dream of suggesting we make the system more like
the US. We do have private clinics and people debate how far we should go to
support that system. And yeah, rarely you have to wait a long time for a
procedure depending on the situation. If you're rich, you can always pay for a
private procedure, and if you're poor, the government will often send you to
the private clinic and cover your costs, including travel in many cases. For
the vast majority of problems, you'll get a doctor soon enough.
