You didn't get around to reading Bill Joy's letter, did you. Bill states that one of the possibilities of merging of Nanotech, Biotech, and Computer tech is the creation of a silicon based life that gets into the biosphere competing for the same resources as the naturally occurring carbon based life forms. The more competitive new life forms result in extinction of the originals by destroying the food chain at its base level. This is only one warning that he mentions, there were several more... most quite ominous... and all within the realm of plausibility. It really is a very well written letter. TC I see...
