Even if the fan is pulling air, you MAY be feeling some "pushed" air due to
air being forced around the radiator... Can you be absolutely certain? Is
it a REALLY powerful air flow?

Wrong flow verified. Car has never overheated.

I plan to get the car back soon to track this down. I just wanted to ask
the list I'd they'd seen this before or I'd Mazda dud something "brilliant"
in 97.

I guess the first thing is to true confirm it is pushing. Fan running
and holding a piece of paper on the front of the radiator would tell you
that.
Do both fans run the wrong way??
Next is to jumper the fan directly to a 12V source and reverse the wires
to see if the fan changes direction. Then measure the + and – feeding the
fan from the harness and see which way it is wired.
This car never overheated in the past?

I’ve never seen a pusher in any car, come to think of it.

I can only assume that it’s been like this for some time, since I’ve been
familiar with that car for the last 160,000 miles (my buddy bought it atr
27k and then later sold it to my dad), but never had cause to check fan
flow direction.

I guess I could trace the wires a bit, but unless someone hacked the
harness in the past before the car had 27k on it, I can only assume that the
fan
was mis-made.

I’ll look into it further and report back.

I think you need to figure that out. I’ve never heard of the Miata
pushing the air out the front of the car with the fan, makes no sense.

I just put the motor back in my Dad’s Miata and while run testing it, I
discovered that the main cooling fan is running backwards — it’s pushing
airforward through the radiator instead of pulling.

To my knowledge, nothing has been done to the wiring on that car. Have
you guys seen this before, and if so, should I make it flow “right” or just
leave it.

Car is a 97STO. I swear, these 97s are the biggest pieces of crap to ever
bear the badge “Miata.” I’ve seen more bizarre issues with 97s than any
other year of Miata.
