Russ,

The only green I am is CASH! :) My state is charging me road taxes.
Currently a flat rate of $100/yr. For me a fairer rate would be $350/yr. I
fully expect that it will end up being a charge per mile that I report/pay when
I renew my tabs each year.

I agree with you that a petro powered turbo Miata gives me a certain pleasure
that I don't get otherwise.

Dennis,

You are right that this is the Miata Power list. I have added NMC / NPC to the
subject line so that all will be aware of the lack of list content. Also, This
will be my last public post on the subject. I will be happy to reply off-list
to any who wish to have a further conversation.

There is so much that I could read into "they" - I'm assuming you mean the
government. I'm ok with paying road taxes for my use to help maintain those
roads. I'm also ok with paying my utility taxes on all power I consume. My
purchase decision was based on the financial payback without any $7500 subsidy.
I do consider myself lucky to be rich enough to afford to buy an electric car
(my payment is $504/mo) - I'd like to see the demand justify more car makers
entering the market and competition causing some lower priced models to be made.

But I do not putt along in the truck lanes in a heavy short range sled. I
drive with the flow of traffic and sometimes faster. My car weighs as much as
a typical 5 person car. A short range of 100 miles is plenty for most of the
driving I do.

Brian

It's a gearhead list for people that own/owned/like or heard of Miatas. :-)

I imagine when the subsidy expires, the costs of making electrics will have
gone down. Interesting point on the road tax though. Maybe we should all have a
driver's license tax. Or to be perfectly fair, a meter we install on our cars
that reads the number of miles driven and charge us by the mile.

Personally, I'll keep my gas cars forever. But more power to those who want to
be green... leaves more gas for me!

Russ

Will it be so fuzzy happy after "they" figure out that you owe $2500 a year in
"fair" road maintenance tax you're not paying at the pump? Will "they" just add
road tax to all electrical bills? And when "they" delete the $7500 subsidy to
the folks rich enough to play the electric game will it still be so good to
putt along in the truck lanes in a heavy short range sled? Is this the Miata
list or the Toyota Pious list?

I don't normally chime in because others have more knowledge and are faster
than I. But I take issue with your assertion that "battery electric cars are
still a stupid idea."

Yes, they have drawbacks (limited range & higher initial cost), but they also
have advantages (lower operating cost & less foreign oil dependence). Current
electric cars are not for everyone and you really need a second "long distance"
car for road trips.
