I'm confused... are you trying to install Tiger? Panther came on CD
already...
My daughter has an iMac with a CD-RW drive and I got around this
problem by starting from an external firewire DVD burner. You might
also do this by removing the drive from the iMac, putting it in an
external firewire case (or a different machine) and installing it
using a different machine. Then, return the drive to the iMac,
connect to the internet and run all the updates. I've had to do that
before too.
