Can you expand on your statement that Pumps as turbines do have a few drawbacks 
that one needs to be aware of?
Besides the fact that they cannot be run at partial flow efficiently what are 
some of the other drawbacks.

  As far as I am aware Thomson & Howe is the only one that has been supplying
  pump-as-turbine for micro-hydropower application. There are many sites in
  Canada with this system that have been in operation for many years. I have
  seen many micro-hydropower systems during my work, I am firm believer in the
  pump-as-turbine for micro-hydropower. However, it does have few drawbacks
  one needs to be aware of. Depending on the site it is cost effective and
  efficient.
