Bruce:

You need to determine the water volume and the head in the distance of
interest, 5 to 10 gallon/sec ( 19 to 28 liter/sec ) is not enough
information .

You need two requirements, volume and head OR volume and water velocity

Flow * head = power.

Low flow for an Aquair unit.

For you, measure the head from intake to turbine site, then be accurate with
the flow, calculate the power : use : water volume * head * 6 = watts
available at generator output.
This may tell you if you can use a pipe for the length of the stream to get
a practical power for you.
Example :
5 gallon/sec ( 19 liter/sec) and 20 feet (6 meter) head may give you
around 684 watts.

Small BANKI or Propeller turbine may do the job -- lastly a low Head Turgo,
Michael Lawley may have what you need http://www.ecoinn.co.nz .

Nando
