Chris You need a few measurements first - flow and head. Also do you have rights to the water eg it is on your land?. Any fish/ aquatic life ? Government agencies may be interested. Does the source flow all year or just in the winter ? It may not be a problem if you also have solar - that gives max output in summer and hydro possibly the other way round. Anyway - first determine how much energy the source can provide There is a formula that can be used to calculate the power (in watts), it is P = 10 x Q x H where H represents the head (in metres) and Q = flow in litres/second. You can use a bucket/ oil drum to measure flow if it is small and you can divert the flow. There are other methods. I did what you want to do - before the internet made things a lot easier!
