hello eric, nice of you to respond. and yes, french authorities are everywhere. there are several places where i intend to do measurements. some promise relatively high heads but do not give flow all year, the river is always filled with at least some water. it is named 'queue d'ane' , 'the donkeys tail', not far from thiviers, dordogne. i will have to go the soft way as in most situations i am not owner of both sides or of the places where the water originates. essentially i think to tap three or four places wih smaller and unobtrusive units, if i will measure acceptable yields of water, over a sufficient long period of time. as i said i live just aside a canal that fed a mill nearby, where remains indicate a former head of 5 or 6 meters. its lenght is about 800 meters, and i will measure the level over the whole lenght in the coming months, which may take some time as there is a lot of underbrush now. even if i would find that the canal slopes more than nowadays necessary for a pipe - and hence could produce water at a consierably higher head - , i doubt if water rights could be revived for it. please tell me some more about your situation in ardeche, if you are so minded. we do know the area somewhat, and have happy memories of holidays along the rivers beaume and ceze there. until later i hope, hans
