Greetings Tom, It sounds like you have a good site. How to measure the speed is important as it dictates what amount of power that you can harness from the flow. A simple method is the float one. Simply mark two points on the shore about 10m apart. Then throw a floating object in upstream of the first marker and start your stopwatch then. Run downstream and stop it as it passes the second marker. Calculate the speed of the water. The power output of the river is equal to Power = 125 X Area X Velocity of river X Velocity of river X velocity of river. As you can see the speed of the river makes a big difference in the power output. Then you will be able to talk more intelligently about your particular situation. Stephen Gregory, M.A.Sc., P.Eng. I own a point lot in the Bahamas that is very remote and is located at the mouth of an approx 30' stream that feeds a large salt pond. The tidal flow is almost continual with very little down time between directional changes. Quite alot of water moves through this cut but I have no measurement or even understand how to obtain one. The site has so much energy flowing by, I am trying learn how to harness and utilize enough for the electrical needs of a home and small work shop. Can this be done practically? Thank Tom -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of sno Sent: Sunday, November 13, 2005 8:12 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [microhydro] Newbie intro Dennis..looks like a great idea....you mention a video on your pages but was unable to find it.... It seems like the volume of water would be low....even if the pressure rises....do you have a volume reading for your setup....in comparison to rpm and pressure....?? thanks...have fun.....sno Dennis Buller wrote: > > Dear Cather, > > I have created a new form of run of the river hydro you may be interested in. It is still in the preliminary phases, but it is simple enough that you may be able to build it. Also on my links page, I have listed all of the run of the river sites that I know of, big and small. > sincerely, > -Dennis > HYPERLINK "http://WildWaterPower.com"http://WildWaterPower.com<HYPERLINK "http://wildwaterpower.com/"http://wildwaterpower.com/> > > Greetings all. > > My name is Cather, and I have recently bought a house in the middle of > nowhere.
