How old is the House?
If its a recent house, the drawings were probably created on the computer
using AutoCAD. You may be able to get a set of plans, Hardcopy, from the
Architect. Softcopy, from a disk, does not import into Visio very well.
Especially if the AutoCAD file used XREF's.
They should be able to make copies of it for a nominal fee. Or, get
softcopy on a disk and have a printing company run you off a hardcopy.
But, if it was drawn the old fashion way on paper, they can be scanned in,
then reprinted.
You can use the drawings with dimensions and recreate it in Visio. You
would need to set up your Visio page to the scale of the original drawings.
I had to do this with an old set of drawings of a rec centers gym floor for
the purpose of a local county fair showing the exhibitor booth layout. My
problem was that the old drawings I was given did not have the dimensions on it.
I had to use a scale ruler, measure the wall lines, then draw it in Visio.
Tedious work, but was successful.
I use Visio on a daily basis for network drawings. Floor plans, rack
elevations, system and circuit diagrams down to the cable pin level.
