This mystery Buteo appeared fairly evenly dark underneath and above, even with 
changes in light & shade. As I watched, it caught something lighter colored, 
brownish, in its talons. 15 seconds later it dropped the object. It was a leaf 
(they were flying horizontally and even upwards today).

As the bird was gaining altitude and moving in a southerly direction, it caught 
another leaf, held it a while, then released it. When it did this for the third 
time it caught a leaf that was very high up. 

I don't know if it was playing - but it sure looked like fun to me -
