Town of Saugerties

Two days into meteorological spring, I heard and observed three
first-of-season American Woodcock vocalizing and displaying under a
bright full moon at approximately 4:30 a.m. this morning, over the open
fields along Krout Road just north of the Village of Saugerties in
extreme northern Ulster County. I am not normally in this area at that
hour, so it is possible these birds may have arrived a day earlier, but
they represent the first woodcock I have encountered this year and what
has traditionally been for me the first realistic indication of spring.
