Hello everyone, just found out about the group, so I figured I'd share my findings at Vassar Farm from last Saturday. It was beautiful out (even got sunburn!) and proved to be an exciting day for close up wildlife photography.
Sightings at the pond near the entrance included a mallard (male), a great blue heron, a song sparrow, and four common mergansers (three male and a female). Of the 25-30 visits to that pond last year, I've never seen common mergansers at Vassar Farm. I got great photos of them, along with the heron. I will try and post them in the photos section. The woods (orange trail) near the pond yielded my second sighting of an adult Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker (last sighting was in Sept. last year as a juvenile in same area). Heading through ecological preserve towards the wooded pond yielded 6 eastern bluebirds total. The pond was void of any birds, but there was at least 40 eastern painted turtles scattered about, as well as three northern water snakes. Hope to post more sightings soon!
