Yesterday morning I stopped at the Cary Institute's Fern Glen to photograph the spring ephemorals beginning to bloom and then did a "short" loop of the Cary Pine Trail, taking the shortcut from post #14 to post #12. Near the large white pine that has fallen across the trail I saw a very large hawk-like bird fly out and land in a tree a short distance through the woods from the path - a Great Horned Owl! It was otherwise very quiet bird-wise, many Robins, a few chickadees and possibly a thrush singing down near the Wappingers creek. .
