Saturday, 1 May 2010 - Ashokan Reservoir A short drive around the lower basin of the reservoir yielded some new arrivals for me, including Cliff Swallow, Warbling Vireo, GC Flycatcher, Nashville Warbler, and Baltimore Oriole. There were several Common Loons and DC Cormorants on the water but otherwise quiet. The pond by the Spillway Dam was devoid of water birds. Highlights included nice close up views of a pair of Louisiana Waterthrushes; looking down at Cliff Swallows flying under Spillway Road bridge; Rusty Blackbirds; and a pair of Broad-winged Hawks engaged in some kind of food offering with one grasping a snake in its talons. Seems like the best wave of migrants went through on April 30. Looking forward to the next couple of weeks and hoping the birds survive the extra perilous journey across the gulf.
