I just spoke with an airline ops person about "day of" aircraft
optimization. When I mentioned our GreenLandingsR "day of optimization, he
said that their airline was already working with their flight planning
supplier to optimize the flight plan after takeoff.

Airleines are missing the point of system optimization.

The way it is done today, flight planning before and after takeoff is local
optimization to set the enroute speed, altitude and fuel burn for each
aircraft to reduce the fuel burn and be closer to on time, without regard to
system effects (schedules, congestion, gate availability, connections,
airport capacity, crew legality, maintenance, etc.). This makes absolutely
zero business sense.

As I have said, which aircraft lands first, second, third, etc. is critical
for airline "day of" operational quality and profitability, especially at
the hubs.

Dr. Russell Ackoff <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqEeIG8aPPk> 's systems
thinking approach below directly applies to why airlines produce "day of"
Operational Dismality (30% daily defect rate, A0).

Dr. Ackoff's quote also applies to our current ATC problems, where we waste
Billions on the "wronger" task of trying to make airlines efficient. It is
not so much that ATC doesn't have the funding, but it is that ATC is
spending money and manpower on the "wrong thing".

"The righter we do the wrong thing, the wronger we become. When we make a
mistake doing the wrong thing and correct it, we become wronger. When we
make a mistake doing the right thing and correct it, we become righter.
Therefore, it is better to do the right thing wrong than the wrong thing
right. Most of our current problems are the result of policy makers and
managers busting a gut to do the wrong thing right. Getting the right thing
wrong is better than putting the wrong thing right."
