Bob, The main issue I can see with allowing this is that it is the company that 
has the full knowledge, records and control of a crewmember’s duty time, hence 
if crewmembers swap among themselves then it may screw up the rostering pattern 
further up the line and still lead to call outs and roster reallocations. By 
all means call in sick and tell crew control you know of someone who’s willing 
to cover but the final decision has to come from those in the know.

 

All of the companies I’ve worked for had their ops team, crewing controllers 
and maintenance controllers in the same room so they could co-ordinate all 
changes together. Whenever stuff started to hit the fan, or just the routine 
day to day operational glitches like unserviceabilities, sickness, no-shows or 
ground handling issues occurred, the rules were to always call it in to the IOC 
– integrated operations centre – and let them peruse the Big Picture” so they 
could make the best calls.

I can understand the concern with ‘sale’ of trips.

 

On the other hand, if the idea of permitting trip trading is to get open time 
covered, and to allow crew members to trade trip obligations amongst 
themselves, when they otherwise might be unfit or unable to report for a trip, 
and leave that trip uncovered, requiring the company to call out, reassign, or 
otherwise utilize a reserve, then even offering an incentive seems benign.
