Not sure where the term β€œdeep South America” originated, but to my mind it
meant anywhere south of Lima or Recife.

Points therein were typically operated with overnight services in both
directions, maximizing connecting possibilities at North American gateways.
One case I can recall, Pan Am’s daylight northbound Buenos Aires-JFK flight
never did as well as its southbound counterpart, particularly in premium
cabins.

Daniel,

At AA it's a loose term but definitely includes Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires,
Santiago and Asuncion. There are extra contract provisions for flying anywhere
south of the equator, like Lima.

At one time we flew to South American cities on the north end of the continent,
which could be serviced with daytime schedules, and large cities farther south
that had double all-nighters. There wasn't anything in between. Nowadays we fly
on and off to Brasilia, Manaus, Recife and maybe a few others that really
aren't that deep and have only one all-nighter leg.

This is a reminder, if any were needed, of how valuable Mifnet is to
gound-based nerds like the undersigned.

I still think the clods in charge of Boeing could have done more to keep the
757/767 lines going, despite the

relative commercial failure of the 757-300 and 767-400. Why concede a market
sector to your competitor in a

duopoly, where the competitor stands to pick up loose chips?

Separately, a query re distance/description. Where does "Deep South America"
begin in US airline terminology?

Loosely the equivalent of a transcon, e.g. ,NYC-California or closer/farther
from MIA?

Always eager to learn from Mifnetters who know what they're talking about.
