Aviation safety operations strained as government shutdown continues

The ongoing government shutdown has left 60,000 US aviation safety workers,
including Transportation Security Administration agents and air traffic
controllers, unpaid for three weeks. The employees are increasingly turning to
savings, credit cards and part-time jobs. The shutdown, driven by a political
standoff over health care subsidies, could lead to increased absences, as seen
in the 2019 shutdown, potentially affecting airport operations and passenger
wait times.

Southwest posts surprise profit, eyes record sales

Southwest Airlines reported forecasting record sales for the current quarter

because of delays in a fleet retrofit and the impact of a government shutdown,
which has cost $1.5 million in daily revenue. Southwest has implemented
measures to manage costs, like charging for checked bags and introducing a
basic-economy fare.

E-fuels absent from EU market despite SAF progress

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency's first report on the ReFuelEU
regulation shows that sustainable aviation fuel uptake is low, at 0.6% of fuel
supplied to airports. However, the EU remains on track to meet targets for 2025
and 2030. The report also notes that SAF use relies heavily on imported
biofuels, especially used cooking oil, which poses fraud risks. E-fuels have
yet to enter the market despite numerous development projects.
