Subject: Re: [Mifos-developer] Issues with French localization

Interesting... we seemed to have bumped into a linguistics issue!;-{)
Not surprising, though.. Internationalization (I18N for short) is not
only a long word, but a rather complicated subject..;-{)

If the problem is as you described, I'm afraid it affects not only the
French localization, since for example it would also occur for Spanish
and I am willing to bet quite a few things that it would for any
non-anglosaxon language! I can't even fathom what would happen if it
MIFOS were to be translated to Chinese or Arabic! hehehe

If you point me to the properties files, or send me a sample of them, I
can look into this particular issue and provide some feedback to the
group.

Hi Nazir,

I spoke with Wassim this morning and he mentioned that you were
concerned about the localization issues with the French version.
Specifically, you were worried about the amount of time it would take to
fix all of these mistakes you were seeing. He didn't have details-- but
I suspect some of the challenges you're facing with the French version
are resulting from the way individual strings are tied together in
Mifos.

For example, in Mifos, a single sentence might be broken into 3 strings:
A B C. In English, and on the JSP page in Mifos, these strings might
be ordered as: A B C. However, for this sentence to be grammatically
correct in French, the order should be: A C B.

Is this the problem you're facing?

Our team can start to look into some of these problems and can try to
help fix them. Unfortunately, we don't speak French (!), so need help
from you and Lassaad to help identify where you're finding problems.

Can you and/or Lassaad give us the following information:
(*) What problem are you facing? Is it the problem described above or a
different one? Can you provide specific examples?
(*) Are these problems throughout the site or are there particular
sections/screens that are most problematic?

Ideally, we would like to get a complete list of all the areas where
you're finding problems/mistakes. Depending on how wide-spread this
problem is-- this could be a lot of work on your side. I'm also not
sure what the best way is for you to provide this data. Do (or anyone
else on the mailing list) have any suggestions?

Also-- if there is anyone on the list who would be willing/able to
provide Spanish translations for the properties files-- this would be
really helpful! This will allow us to fix issues with both French and
Spanish at the same time.

Thanks!
Emily
