Keith mentioned simply setting up a custom HTTP "service" would probably work 
well enough for monitoring Solr. I agree.

For example:

* fetch http://mifos.org/search/apachesolr_search/foo
* ensure response does *not* contain "search engine is not available"

We've done similar setups for other HTTP services like Mifos running over port 
8080 (see HTTP-8080 in poller-configuration.xml ). Also see custom HTTP service 
monitoring example on [MIFOS:Monitoring Severs With OpenNMS] (look under 
heading "Service discovery and polling configuration").
