Brad,
What did you pay for the butterfly? I cannot stand it when a
company doesn't publish a price. Makes me feel that the price depends
upon who I know vs. what the product is.

I just started using the R52H cards. I use the meter in the link below in
the office first to check the power settings. I found that on the default
setting the cards have a tendance to drop power a lot (like they are pushing
more than they can handle). I suspect the same may be true for other
cards. I also NEVER run a card without an antenna hooked up, which I
believe MY recommends on their cards.

You blew the amps. If you could open them up, which you can do with
R52h's, you'll see a hole in the middle of the amp where the magic
jumped out. All the vendors now recommend you don't run in anything
but default, unless you really need to run much lower power levels.
Recommendations for all atheros cards: Do Not run without pigtails
attached and be careful not to switch to antenna connection without
pigtail. Run at defaults. Disable when not being used. Use static
protection. Pom Poms are great!
PomPoms can be made by taking a large guage copper wire, and crimping a
braided wire around it with the wire crimps found at Home Depot in the
wire rope section. Cut the braided wire about a foot above the crimp
and then splay the braided wire out. The more the small wires the
better. Splay them out into a ball shape. This should be mounted
above the highest antenna.

We had this exact same problem with a pair of Ubiquiti cards. Evidently
when our routerboards were programmed the power output was set to manual
and the power was set several dB over the actual output of the cards.
This ended up permanently desensitizing the card which resulted in a
drop in gain between 10 and 20 dB.
We replaced the cards and set the power output to auto and have had no
problems since.
I'd recommend the Ubiquiti xr2 cards, we are doing AES-CCM and TKIP
encryption with them without any issues. They also have a great receive
sensitivity which works well for maintaining usable links well into the
-80's sometimes even into the -90's.

I spoke with a group of engineers just the other day that said the
recent
shipment of XR cards from Ubiquiti have had a pretty nerve racking
failure
rate - they suggested a model very similar to that of the R52H.
I believe all modern cards will do AES encryption, but correct me if I
am
wrong.

We just put up a new RB532 AP with a 2.4 radio. All clients are

the
AP
and some of the clients and the signals remain poor. Running
latest
firmware on RB532 and the Tranzeo cpe's. Have not made and
changes to
the config since putting the unit. Only major change has been the

mid-30's.
I'll have our tower guys check the antenna tomorrow, but

there is anything else i should check? Could the cold nights
done
something to the radio???
