Depending on the complexity of the input you are expecting, might it be enough 
to expect the user to set some global variables first, sanity-check the 
contents of those variables at the beginning of your script, and if they are 
empty or invalid, print out some usage/directions to the console and then quit? 
Not the most elegant, sure, but perhaps better than nothing...
