I would do the same thing.

or i might go a step further and embed HTML tags inside the <pre></pre>
blocks to be even more annoying.

and then say "I dunno, your mail client must not parse HTML properly"

of course there's always the option of complying to HTML mail and
sending all mail with a font size of 4.
