When I coded and was releasing MSYS my final test before release was to
build GCC.  If it didn't work I had more work to do.  I don't code and
release MSYS any longer and I'm not sure what checks are done.  However,
if GCC doesn't build, I would think it is a regression that needs
documented in the SF MinGW project bug tracker.  As for the slowness,
well, much of Windows OS is slower than Linux, just a fact of life.  The
emulation and string manipulation MSYS must do though would slow down
the process a bit more.
