While this is true on sparc systems, I don't believe it is true on sparc64 machines. I recently tested booting off CD on a U1e with several off-the-shelf (i.e., not 512 byte sector, pulled from PCs) SCSI CDROM drives, and I am pleased to report they Just Worked. Nick.
