Strongly disagree!

He is trying to install OpenBSD/i386 on an amd64 platform.

From what I could find, this board had a notoriously buggy BIOS.

You'll want to install the latest available BIOS. Your version is
quite old revision-wise and was apparently subject to security
vulnerabilities.

By the way, this was nearly impossible to find, and they have
since memory holed all their desktop boards. Intel's support
site of that era was not well indexed by archive.org due to its
crappy web design. But where there's a will, there's a way.

Hello,

I have an old Intel i5 desktop that I was not able to install
OpenBSD onto, and I have used for some years with other OSs.
I'd like to use this excellent OS, though, so I am trying again.

The dmesg from a bsd.rd boot is posted below. It was created using a
usb flash drive that has 7.7 installed. The flash drive successfully
boots 7.7, as tested on 2 other desktops.

I can boot bsd.rd, and even install the os on the hard drive. When I
attempt to boot ./bsd from the hard drive, or from the live system on
the flash drive, the last lines that it prints before crashing are:

spkr0 at pcppi0
wbsio0 at isao port 0x2e/s: NCT677SF rev 0x73
npx0 at isa0 port 0xf0/16: reported by CPUID using exception 16
kernel: protection fault trap code=503
stopped at softintr_dispatch+0x1: movl %esp,%epb
ddb>

After the 'ddb>', the system is unresponsive, even to a

CTRL-ALT-DEL, and requires several seconds on the power button to turn off.

Since the system crashes, I couldn't do anything with ddb, even if I knew
how to use it (at which I have no experience).

I can't enclose the output from the attempted boot because of the hard
crash. I could try to take photos or video if that is desired.
I could also copy more lines than the last 3, up to as many are on the
screen, if that is desired.

I read enough about 'boot -c' learn how to disable, and I tried
disabling the last item before the crash, which was npx0, but the
system still crashes.

If anyone has a suggestion as to what I might try next, I'd be
grateful for it.

Thank you
