TL;DR:
Things are still not working, and I plan to just run another OS on the i5,
and use it for tax preparation (using libreoffice) and 2 TB of data storage.
I just won't expose it to the internet.
But I thank all who have taken the time to share their expertise, and
suggest possible solutions.
The longer version:
The first fix I tried was to use amd64 instead of i386. Alas, it
still crashes during boot, and requires a physical power cycle via the
front panel. If anyone is interested, though, I will be glad to
prepare photos and/or a movie of the abortive boot, and send it to you.
I am also willing to transcribe the last screen by hand, if you wish
me to send you that (smaller) text file.
I have appended the 7.7 dmesgs for PXE ramdisk boots of i386 and
amd64, in case that is of interest.
I tested ability to boot i386 and amd64 by installing each in turn on
a flash drive (on another system), checking that the flash drive would
boot /bsd on the system which created it, then checking the the ramdisk
kernel on the flash drive would boot on the i5, and finally verifying
that the /bsd from the flash drive crashes the i5.
The next fix was changing IDE to AHCI in the bios. So I went to the
bios, and selected:
CONFIGURATION -> CHIPSET-SATA-MODE -> AHCI (had been IDE)
I hope that this was what was being suggested.
Alas, this did not change the result, it still crashes. If it is of
any interest, the linux OS still boots OK with this resetting of the
BIOS. I would have thought it would only work one way; but what do I
know - that is why I am asking.
It was suggested that I read https://www.openbsd.org/report.html, and
I did so, but I don't see what I can do if ddb has hard-crashed.
There are suggestions that I have not attempted. I have no experience
in flashing a bios, especially one whose firmware is outdated,
unsupported, and difficult to find. But it is my lack of knowledge
that holds me back, I am not criticizing the suggestion.
And I have taken to heart the suggestion to get a new system. I just
did that, and it has not gone well. Perhaps I will post a message about
that.
