I am fairly sure that I had both base and xbase installed... Under a quick search for expat I can find these files: /usr/X11R6/include/expat.h /usr/X11R6/include/expat_external.h /usr/X11R6/lib/libexpat.a /usr/X11R6/lib/libexpat.so.8.0 /usr/X11R6/lib/libexpat_pic.a I take a peek at xbase.tgz, seems like I already had them in my system. It does not seem like installing xbase over the existing xbase will do anything. Thanks.
