I've realised my problem. Using the internal carp interface assures that routes will only be announced when it is set to master. If I also have ospf working on the real internal interface (to talk to the next router) then the state of the carp interface doesn't matter, the internal routes will still be announced. The fix is, redistribute static and a static route. -- joe.
