Correct. As far as I can see though only the TRV140 D8 unit was
crippled like that. All the higher numbered models (340, 740, 840)
can play analog 8mm tapes and do passthru DV conversion.
> The CCD of some newer D8 models is 1/6". Sony just decided to cripple
Which is fairly small these days. 'miniDV camcorders use 1/5 or even
1/4" CCDs with the best units approaching 1/3" (and having 3 CCDs in
the most expensive models).

The top of the line models can do 2 megapixel still photos with
models just below the top doing ~1-1.5 megapixels.

Yes, it is great - must say this is a real good mailinglist (certainly
one of the friendliest ;)).

We do not have that many choices in mjpegtools-land ;)

Experimentation time :)
The key thing to watch is the average/peak bitrates that mplex
reports. I use "the lower the bitrate without visible degradation"
as a guidline.
> Should I use the denoiser before the Scaler?
Yes, that gives the denoising process first access to the data before
it has been altered by scaling.
I did an experiment once with "yuvscaler | yuvdenoise" compared to
"yuvdenoise | yuvscaler" and putting the denoiser first resulted in
a slightly lower (1 or 2%) average bitrate.
> mpeg2enc -N didn't make much visual difference when I tried it.
But was the average bitrate lower? A lower bitrate without visual
difference is exactly what you want to happen - that way you can
fit more movie on a CD-R without giving up visual quality.

For (X)SVCD I have used 704x480 (NTSC obviously ;)) but the playing
time is of course much less than standard SVCD. The 352x480 looked
acceptable for casual viewing.
My preference though is for 480x480 (or in your case 480x576) but
increase the bitrate to ~3500 (or whatever your players can handle
reliably).
Are these videos going to be played on other players (loan a SVCD
to a friend for example)? If so then it is probably a good idea to
remain within the SVCD specification. If not then feel free to create
whatever format your players can handle.

That's DVD resolution - creating DVDs would be preferable to SVCDs
at that size.
One thing to consider is that the drive in DVD players often has
a fairly low limit on how fast it can read the mode2form2 sectors of a
(XS)VCD. Some DVD players can read XSVCDs around 4500Kb/s while
others struggle to handle the standard ~2700 (2500 video + audio).
At ~4500Kb/s a CD-R can only hold ~20 minutes or less of movie.
For interchange I settled on DVDs - I just had too many problems with
other people having players that had trouble playing VCD/SVCDs.
Cheers,
