I'd say it's interference, "noise transfered from other parts within the computer". Furthermore, I doubt that it is in the digital domain; more likely is analog interference. I had a very similar problem with my Buz, vertical bands all over the image. After much experimentation, I found out that they vanished if I disabled eth0. Yaay. :) It _seems_ like your bands come from the graphics card, but there are several likely sources for this kind of interference. A computer is an incredibly noisy environment. It could be that large transfers take enough current to affect the power supply of your video grabber card, or something.
