It is in the DVD specifications. I believe version 1.0 allows
_only_ PCM and AC3 while version 1.1 permits MPEG-1/Layer-2
I've made dozens (hundreds?) of DVDs using MP2 audio and have
yet to find a single player that will not play the discs.
More recently though I have been using Apple's AC3 encoder
(A.Pack) to encode the audio to AC3 (mpeg2enc does the video
encoding - seems to be a better encoder than the one that
comes with Quicktime-Pro) but MP2 audio will work just fine.
Most standalone DVD players can also play MP3 CDs, etc so it
would take an extremely ancient (1st generation) DVD player to
not recognize a version 1.1 DVD
