It'd take the schematics to be sure but the way I was under the
impression that it worked was: if the VCR has a S-Video output
then the signal was sent straight out without being "composited" but
if there was NOT an S-video output then the signals would be
combined and sent out the "RCA" connectors.
It is getting more difficult to find VCRs with S-video outputs these
days - JVC's about the only company still making them. So most folks
will be using the composite connectors and would benefit greatly from
the Y/C separation in the a->d conversion unit.

You might give it a try - the 'Y/C' like on the advc300 will go out
since the signals are already separate.

Not at all. The Y/C separation in the advc300 is, I'm sure, very good
but IF using the S-Video output on the VCR avoids compositing in the
first place then that's a Good Thing.
