If it is any help to you I will send you a copy of an OpenOffice presentation I did for my local LUG, in which I detail the steps to turn the input into DVDs.
I chose DVDs because VCDs are not always supported by stand-alone players, and with disks now cheap the wasted space didn't seem relevant. As for the man pages - I found that it was essential to have all of them printed out. There are so many possible parameters, and they don't always have the same/expected result in different tools.
