Another stab in the dark; perhaps force a format. From man
mencoder for -lavcopts:

for lossless JPEG, ffv1 and svq1

for lossless JPEG and ffv1

-lavcopts vcodec=mjpeg:format=422P:vbitrate=15000
? ... ok, I better shut up, because I have no experience at all
with mjpeg codec.
