I had the dealer pull the head to see what the cause was (I know, bad move going to the dealer, but many of the local vw shops didn't want to touch my car with a ten foot pole once they found out it is a 16v). Anyway, there is a burnt exhaust valve in the #2 cyl. The dealer wants to charge me $1700 to repair it and replace the timing belt/tensioner and a few various seals that are leaking. I can not afford that and I think they are just trying to rip me off anyway. My question is this. I found a shop that will repair the head for me, but I still have to get the engine back together and running. How hard of a job would this be? If I bought a Bentley manual and took my time could I do it myself, or is it better left to a professional. Hey folks, Here's the current situation. I've got the opportunity to pick up an '86 GTI cheap. It's got a 16v conversion already done (1.8 from an '89 GLI). I know it's got cams (or at least the Euro intake), Pacesetter header, some sort of hacked-up exhaust setup, and a bunch of new parts. Very rough body, but it runs strong. Problem is that the tranny is shot. I don't want to put too much into it, I'd just like to pick it up as a little something to beat around in, and have fun with. Be nice to keep the '87 looking good, with the fresh paint and all. So, my question is, how much should I expect to spend on a decent tranny for this car? I don't want to put too much $$ into it, like I said.. I wouldn't mind using an 8v tranny, would that be a good idea? The gearing of the 8v would probably provide the acceleration I'm looking for. Anyhow, any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
