My '88 GTI 16v has run into a couple problems with the
strut barings. I have purchased the VR6 barings and
all the proper pieces to make the conversion from the
stock set-up...I was going to try to put them on
myself...does anyone know how involved this process is
to change everything? I made sure that the conversion
kit would fit my bilsteins so I'm pretty sure
everything is compatible.

I have Bilstein sports with the VR6 strut bearings, so it work fit fine fro you. I had my mechanic do it, since I don't have access to, or feel comfortable with, a spring compressor. However, it should be no more difficult than replacing the stock bearings, which is decsribed in the Bentley.
