If you really want to be loyal to the marque, try a VW diesel pickup, and
put some later 14" steel wheels and 80 series snows on it. There are a
couple around my town (rural area) that people use for the dump run,etc.
If you want sport, try a Subaru XT Turbo with awd and the hydraulic
suspension - low for handling, high for ground clearance. And the instrument
pod is pretty funky in an 80's sort  of way.
