The air shrouds provide nothing more then cooling for the injectors. None of the air for combustion comes from the injector shrouds. Air is actually sucked from the manifold and ran back into the intake by the shrouds. What is more likely is a bad injector that is squirting, not spraying. John C. has had an injector do this and it caused missfiring and backfiring at low rpms...like under 3k. I would suggest you pull the injectors and do the spray pattern test like in the bentley.
