Sorry, but I must respectfully disagree. I converted my '85 Golf to R134a
about 2 years ago.
When I last did a comparison temperature test between my '85 Golf and '87
GTI 16V 
(My '87 GTI 16V still has the R12) they tested virtually the same (35
degrees for the Golf
and '34 degrees for the GTI 16V). BTW, this test was conducted using the
same test equipment,
on the same day, after both VWs had just been fully charged.
I have not re-tested the '85 Golf lately but judging from the frost on my
windows yesterday
she is still blowing cold....
