I had my 92 GTI converted to R134 last summer when I needed to replace the AC
Compressor. I read and read and read up about the
subject and saw all the warnings about how a R12 car converted to R134a will
never be as cool as an R12 car with R12 or a R134a
car with R134a. I went ahead and did it anyways and also added a can of this
Quik Boost additive
(http://www.epatest.com/q_qwikboost.html) After the conversion I bought a
digital meat thermometer and stuck it in the center
dash vent and while I dont remember exactly what it registered, I do recall it
being in the low 30's. Personally that's plenty
cold enough for me and I've been happy ever since.

During my recent motor swap I developed a leak in my AC system and had to get
it recharged. I'm currently running straight R134a
and I can tell that it's not as cold, but it still cools the car well.
