Nah, its actually kinda cool driving around town off-boost. In my 931 I
get like 30MPG off boost and only 18 on boost, so I like to cruise it.
Having the boost come on at around 3000-3500 in a 1.8T would put it
right at or just above cruising speed, so it would be a bit of a bitch
to get moving in a hurry without a downshift, but hey, thats why they
make transmissions :) If the area under the torque curve truly was
showing only 50HP then, yes that would be undriveable as you would HAVE
to keep the R's up to generate enough torque to get moving. I think a
300HP 1.8T with a T3/T4 on it wouldnt lag that bad, probably on par with
a 930 like you mentioned. You also get used to driving a turbo in
traffic, you get used to pinning the throttle to the floor 2 seconds
early in anticipation of the next opening in traffic, ETC. YMMV.
