Ouch! Hurts from here, just to read.
My advice would generally be that if the bodywork is sound and straight,
you replace components and continue driving it; if it's bent slightly, it
will have to be straightened. If the structure is beyond straightening,
write it off and look for another ride. The guys who know VWs will be far
more qualified to look at it and see what is hurt, and how badly, than the
general-knowledge mechanics at any other shop. Ask them whether they'd look
at it where it is (especially if there's a lift that can be used!) or prefer
to have it towed in. Practically all of the suspension parts can be
replaced with straightforward work - no cutting and welding, say - even a
rear axle or a front crossmember can be pulled from a salvage yard and
transplanted.
The wheel not reacting to steering input could be simple as a broken
tie-rod end, but you'll need to check that the rack itself is good (likely
is). HTH.

Subject: slammed dub into curb (steering & susp. ?'s)

Hey all
First of all let me say , how much i appreciate all the info on this list ,
i only wish i had enough knowledge and time to help most of us out. Well its
true and im sad about it but i suppose i gotta push on. The cars right two
wheels and "things behind them" suffered the most. my question would be for
you all , do you guys think i should replace the components , or start
looking for another ride? I just got the motor dialed in and running
perfect, the left side is fine , the only things from my hasty and uncareful
observation after the accident that i saw were apparent was :

1) the right front control arm extension and tie rods, i thing all in that
area were pretty badly hit. enough so that the wheel doesnt react to the
steering

2) two banged up teardrops

3) rear axle damage where the wheel is connected

from all i could tell that was it , but i guess ill have the gas station
shop look at it tommorrow and lmk

also do you guys think i should instead of having the gas station d00ds look
at it , maybe just tow it once and for all to my regular VW shop and let
them see it or what , thanks a bunch guys in advance

Gabriel
